Microsoft updated their account activity policy on July 01, 2019 making it clear that they will be deleting all accounts that have been inactive for more than two years. Any account that hasn’t been used for more than two years will be considered as inactive.
Now there are some exemptions to this policy which I will discuss later in this post. But you need to start worrying about your data if you are a Microsoft account holder who hasn’t logged in to their account for more than two years.
This change is going to be effective since August 30, 2019. So, if you have any data stored in OneDrive, you better sign in at least once to your Microsoft account. This news might also be a bit bothersome for the gaming community. Any free games saved in your Xbox will also get deleted if your account comes in the inactive category.
What are the exceptions that will result in Microsoft keeping your account active even if you haven’t logged in for more than two years?
Your Microsoft account will remain active if you have bought any current Microsoft product or service using the same account. In this case, it won’t matter if you haven’t explicitly logged in to your account in the past two years or not.
Your Microsoft account will remain active if you were using any of their subscription-based services like Xbox Live, Office 365, Office Online, OneDrive, Skype and Outlook. To keep your account active, you are required to use these services using your Microsoft credentials.
3. Account Balance
Don’t worry if you have a non-zero balance in Microsoft account. Your money is not going anywhere. If you have unspent balance, Microsoft will keep all the account active(irrespective of when they last logged in to their account). This rule also applies to people who have received cash from a Microsoft gift card or a credit from Microsoft. Moreover, your account will also remain active if Microsoft owes you any money.
How to check the current status of my Microsoft account?
To check your current status, you just need to login to the Microsoft account management website. Once you log in, you will see a highlighted message on the dashboard informing you of your current status. They are deactivating burner accounts that haven’t been used for a long time or are just abandoned by the account holders.
Will the games I purchased on Xbox years ago be deleted if I haven’t logged in to the Microsoft account for more than two years?
No, your games won’t be deleted and you will still be able to access your saved data. You have purchased the games, so it doesn’t matter how frequently you use your account. You will always be considered an active user. Secondly, for those who haven’t purchased a single Xbox game, your account will be deleted if not used for more than two years(unless you have logged in to your Xbox Live account on PC).
