So, you want to rotate a video and save it that way permanently? There can be many reasons why someone could be wanting to rotate a video. Maybe you came across a video–on the internet–that you liked, but after saving, found out that it is inverted.

Or maybe you are a video editor and are trying to solve this problem for your employer/client. Whatever the reason is, I am pleased to tell you that it is possible to rotate a video without having to purchase a specialized tool.

Plus, Windows Movie Maker is outdated and you won’t find it in the newer versions of the Windows operating system. Hence, you need to download another tool called VLC Media Player by clicking here. However, I would also like to inform you that rotating a video with VLC player is not as easy it seems.

How to rotate a video in Windows 10?

Step 1:

Begin the process of rotating a video in Windows 10 by installing the VLC Media player on your system and then opening the video file (upside down video.mp4 in our case) by either double-clicking on the video thumbnail or Right-click–> Open as–>VLC Media Player

Step 2:

As you can see from the image above, the video is upside down, this is how it was when I found it online. Next, head to the navigation menu and click on Tools–>Effects and Filters as shown in the image below.

Step 3:

Click on the second tab named Video Effects, further click on another tab Geometry— this is where you get to rotate the image at 90-degree angles. Check the box Transform and select the angle you want.

In my case, I am selecting “rotate by 180 degrees”. As you can see from the image below the orientation of the paused video shifts by 180 degrees. The picture of the Owl is now upright and I can view the video the way it is meant to be enjoyed.

Step 4:

However, the above strategy only works if you wish to watch the video once. Once you close the window, the settings will reset to the default. To make permanent changes to the upside-down video.mp4 file, you need to click on the Media option in the menu.

Step 5:

Further, hover your mouse in the bottom left of the window and click on All as shown in the image below. New options will populate. In the left sidebar menu, click on Stream Output–>Sout Stream–>Transcode. Follow the below image; it will help you locate the options.

Step 6:

Next, go to the right side of the window and check the box with the label Video transformation filter. Click on the Save button. Next, you can select the source file that needs conversion. To do that, click on the down arrow adjacent to the Convert/Save button, and select convert as shown in the image below. The final step is to save the file at the desired location in your hard drive.

Conclusion

I hope the above method of rotating a video file with the help of the VLC Media Player helped you. There are other ways too. Every media player has a facility to carry out the same operations we did above in this post. But I found VLC Media Player to be the best free of cost tool for this particular task.
