Do you wish to play older games like MechCommander on your new Windows 10 machine?
Many of the older games like Battlefield, Dragon Age and Fallout are still fully compatible with Windows 1 0. The fallout was first released in 1997! Microsoft makes sure that the popular in-demand games still run flawlessly on their newer operating systems.
However, some lesser-known games may not run straightaway. You may have to go through some hoops to make them run on a newer computer– with much-advanced specs.
Games like MechCommander were developed in the 90s. Back then, people had Windows 95 or Windows 98 installed on their computers. So, it makes total sense for these games to not run on a newer machine. But there is still hope. This post is intended to help you run older games on your Windows 10 computer.
How to run old games on a Windows 10 machine the easy way?
The solution is quite simple. But before I get there, you need to quickly check whether the game needs to be run by the administrator. Newer operating systems are enabled with a built-in anti-malware known as “User Access Control(UAC)“. Hence, not all executable files on your PC are going to have administrator privileges by default.
On some occasions, your PC will prompt for consent after you double click to run an application on the hard drive. Moreover, you might also need to enter your valid administrator credentials in some cases.
Most often, you will be successful in running an older game merely by running as an administrator. If this maneuver does not work, you might have to make changes in the compatibility settings.

How to let the system make changes in the compatibility settings for me?
To let your system do all the troubleshooting tasks for you, you will have to use the “Program Compatibility Troubleshooter” provided by Windows. The only function of this program is to fix issues that stop older programs from running on a Windows 10 machine.
To get started, go to the Windows search bar in the bottom left of your screen and type the keyword “Program Compatibility Troubleshooter”. Click on the first result on the list and you will see a new window looking something like this.
Click next and the program will start detecting issues on your computer. It will also present you with a list of programs installed on your computer. If you don’t see your desired game on this list, don’t worry, you can also enter the location of the executable file. Refer to the following 2 screenshots.
Once you select the game you wish to run, next, you need to let the system recommend the right settings for your machine. Just click on the “Try Recommended Settings” button and you wait for the configuration changes to take effect. Further, you can test the game by running it as an administrator.
Conclusion
This is all you have to do to run an old game on your Windows 10 machine. I understand that there will still be older games that will not run on a newer machine. In such a case you will have to search for a specific solution online.
