Safe mode is a mode of operation in which you get to perform actions that may be unsafe to perform in normal mode. Safe mode differs from the normal mode in the sense that your computer runs without the device-specific drivers and services.
Meaning, instead of the graphics card, an inbuilt video card will be in operation. This may lower the performance of your system, but you don’t need to worry about it as the purpose of booting your PC in safe is only to perform certain actions(in just a few minutes).
What do I need to know before starting my Windows 10 PC in safe mode?
I always get questions like “How to start Windows 10 in safe mode?” or “What’s the best way to delete device conflicting files?“. Therefore, I am sharing below some amazingly simple steps to start your PC in safe mode. You don’t have to be an expert to do this.
Moreover, based on your circumstances, you can enter safe mode in more than one way. Three to be specific. Here are three ways to enter a safe mode.
Enter safe mode via Settings
If you have already signed-in and want to enter safe mode, you can do that via System Settings. Just press the Windows logo key + I to open Settings. Or you can just type the keyword “settings” in the search box at the bottom-left of your screen.
Select Update & Security –> Recovery. Next, under Advanced startup, select Restart now. Before we go through future steps lets see how to come to this point via the sign-in screen.
Enter safe mode via sign-in screen
If for some reason you are not able to sign-in and want to enter safe mode right after you start your PC, just press and hold the Shift key while choosing to restart the PC.
Enter safe mode via Windows Recovery Environment (winRE)
To enter safe mode via Windows Recovery Environment (winRE), you must turn on and turn off your computer a few times in a row. Assuming your PC is switched off initially, just hold the power button to turn on, wait till the Windows logo appears and then press the same key to turn the device off. Do this a few times and let the device restart completely. You will enter the Windows Recovery Environment (winRE) mode.
Here are the steps to enter safe mode to follow after you restart your PC via any of the above-mentioned methods
Step 1:
Once your PC restarts, you won’t see the usual sign-in screen. Instead, you will see something like this. Select the option to Troubleshoot.
Step 2:
Within the Troubleshoot window, you will see two options: Reset this PC and Advanced Options. Select Advanced Options as shown in the image below.
Step 3:
Within Advanced Options, select Startup Settings as shown in the image below.
Step 4:
After selecting Startup settings, the system will ask you to restart again. Press the restart button as shown in the image below. Once, your PC restarts, select the 4th option. and your Windows PC will enter in safe mode.
