Is Microsoft’s xCloud the Future of Game Streaming?

In 2019, Microsoft teased with the idea of launching a Netflix-like service exclusively for gaming. However, due to delays in development, the release of the project xClould has stalled until the end of this year. The xClould app lets a user access thousands of games on a small device such as a smartphone or tablet. Will this be a new jackpot for Microsoft?

On October 8, 2018, Microsoft announced the preview version of the xClould. Later on, the team executed successful trials in October 2019 and November 2019. The trial version has 50 games on it. The service is tested on iPhone and Sony Interactive Entertainment’s DualShock controllers.

It is one thing to stream movies on a handheld device but to play HD-quality games like Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, Madden NFL 20 or Shadow Warrior 2 is new. Application potentially extends to virtually any other genre or game type. You could theoretically use the xClould app with online casino games for example, although such games were not featured in the preview.

Will Microsoft’s xCloud Live up to Its Expectations?

Compared to Google’s Stadia Premiere Edition— which, by the way, is Microsoft xClould’s only real competitor at the moment— the xClould’s preview version has a lot more games available. It runs smoothly (the 720p version) even with 4G internet. Although, the app is meant to be used with wifi or 5G.

It also seamlessly integrates with Sony’s wireless controller. Already have an Xbox in your home? You don’t have to purchase another controller. The same device connects with the xClould (also simultaneously disconnects with the Xbox, and vice-versa) when you start the app.

Furthermore, if you don’t find your favorite casino game on the xClould preview server, simply switch the control to your Xbox device. The xClould app (installed on your smartphone or tablet) will seamlessly stream the game from the Xbox game console.

There is more than one way to enjoy your favorite games until Microsoft launches the full version of this app. In conclusion, the project xClould has lived up to its expectation. It not only runs smoothly but also is easy to use. Just like Netflix, there are no complicated menus or unexpected glitches.

Some Reactions on Twitter

Joey McDermott, president and founder of OTN Media, is one of the prominent names in the gaming industry.

He says,

If Stadia is going to make moves, this Summer is the time to do it. Microsoft’s xCloud is coming in hot this Fall“.

Scotch German from Cypress, Texas says,

“Microsoft’s Project xCloud preview on iOS is extremely limited in testers and games due to ‘App Store restrictions.’

Do you think Apple is suppressing it on purpose for fear that it will take business away from Apple Arcade?

Do you think these theoretical fears are justified?”
