OpenAI is an artificial intelligence company formed by Elon Musk in December 2015. Headquartered in San Francisco, California, this team of 100 talented tech and non-tech people are gathering headlines as they continue to perform some mind-bending research in the field of artificial general intelligence(AGI).
Recently they caught the attention of big tech like Microsoft who later went to invest 2 billion dollars in this tiny AI company. OpenAI’s motto is to invest their resources in building human-friendly AI that will go on to serve people and not the other way around. An increasing number of people are worried about losing their jobs due to AI replacing them. OpenAI affirms that they will not let this happen and AGI is going to be a good thing for the human race.
Microsoft and OpenAI will work together on Azure
“The creation of AGI will be the most important technological development in human history, with the potential to shape the trajectory of humanity,” said Sam Altman, CEO, OpenAI.
On July 22, 2019, Microsoft and OpenAI joined hands to work on Microsoft’s new Azure AI supercomputing technology. Microsoft Azure was founded about 10 years ago to help software companies perform their software-related task on the cloud.
Sam Altman and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella believe they can make some technological breakthroughs shortly if they work together by having values like trustworthiness and empowerment.
Why is OpenAI partnering up with Microsoft?
Like any other small tech company, OpenAI also needs funding that will allow them to experiment and work on things without having to worry about money. The best way to achieve this to build a product and partner up with a giant like Microsoft who has decades of experience in marketing software-related products.
Maintaining focus on building powerful AI technologies is Sam Altman’s priority. OpenAI is a small organization and they cannot afford to divert their attention in creating commercial products. By partnering up they can delegate the responsibility of things like marketing/advertising/manufacturing/advertising to their partners so they are free to focus on what they do best.
Why Elon Musk left OpenAI?
In 2018 Elon Musk left the OpenAI board to focus solely on Tesla and SpaceX. Tesla’s chief executive officer also confirmed on Twitter that Elon was unhappy with the engineering problems occurring frequently in Tesla and SpaceX. This is one reason why there was some disagreement within the OpenAI board and Elon Musk has to leave the board. He still owns the shares though.
What are the benefits of big tech teaming up with AI companies like OpenAI?
According to Elon Musk, AI is one area where the creators of it need to proactive instead of reactive. He wants AI companies to work under strict regulations as there are consequences of letting AI technology grow like wildfire. Bad people might get hold of it and create all sorts of a nuisance. Big tech like Microsoft will have to follow regulations set by the government and prevent misuse of this technology.
